Mission and Philosophy

August 19, 2023

Mission Statement:

WLC is a place where families come together to share in the learning experience, functioning as guides to help instruct and facilitate their child’s growth academically and in integrity.

Philosophy:

We believe we should support families in their goals academically, morally, and socially by supplying the necessary resources to create a love for reading (through literature) and promote explorative, hands-on activities to develop critical thinking. We will encourage healthy interaction and group activities reinforcing traditional values with guided learning rather than a “typical” learning environment of monotonous, repetitive, busy work.

Goals:

To include life skills throughout the process.

To instill a love for reading and writing.

To reinforce debate skills and conflict resolution by listening and understanding opposing viewpoints.

To help internalize learned concepts through discussion, presentations, and information read and presented by coaches and children.

To encourage understanding of math & logic; to think critically to solve problems independently or in small groups.

Methods:

Children will be expected to learn material through reading, discussion, presentations, and projects with guided instruction.  The children will be encouraged to explain recently learned material.

At the high school level, curriculum and learning focus is selected with life skills in mind, as well as the academic needs of the individuals. Curriculum options will depend on coach availability.

Parents/coaches will be encouraged to use guidance and discussion styles rather than lectures. Parents are encouraged to integrate various subjects at home (additional math, science, language  and computer), so that this Learning Center will work with a broad range of families.
