About Westfield Learning Center
Mission Statement:
To establish a center where families can come together to share in the learning experience, functioning as guides to help instruct and facilitate their child’s education.
Philosophy:
We believe we should support families in their educational goals academically, morally, and socially by supplying the necessary resources to create a love for reading (through literature) and promote explorative, hands-on activities to develop critical thinking. We will encourage healthy interaction and group activities reinforcing traditional values with guided learning rather than a “typical” school environment of monotonous, repetitive, busy work.
Goals:
Include life skills throughout the educational process.
Instill a love for reading.
reinforce debate skills and conflict resolution by listening and understanding opposing viewpoints.
Help internalize learned concepts through discussion, presentations, and information read and presented by others.
Encourage understanding of math & logic; to think critically to solve problems independently or in small groups.
Methods:
At the lower levels all subjects will be guided instruction until basic skills and concepts are learned. As children grasp the necessary concepts to work independently, they will be introduced to workbook and on-line learning with coaching/tutor support. Curriculum options for high school will depend on coaching availability. Children will be expected to learn material through reading, discussion, presentations, and projects with guided instruction. They will be encouraged to explain recently learned material. Coaches will be trained to use guidance and discussion styles rather than lectures. Quiet time is an important part of the learning process and will be allotted.
Parents have choice to integrate various subjects at home (art, creative writing, Bible, history, geography, etc.), so that this Learning Center can be tailored to the needs of a broad range of families.
